Back in January, we brought you this info about a new bar coming to 31st Ave: In a twitter convo with John Elezovic, he tells us “Keep on the look out for a new spot in Astoria late Summer. It’s going to be awesome!” After a little prodding we learned that he and his brother Nick will be opening a joint serving “craft beer, cocktails, & the best music in Astoria” and “NO top 40 & Pop, EVER.” It will be located at 31st Avenue and 34th Street (Astoria’s food nexus), just a few doors down from Milkflower and Il Bambino. We’ve been talking to John over the past few months and finally learned that he and his brother (who used to bartend at Sparrow) have a name for this watering hole—Diamond Dogs, the name’s of which has origins with David Bowie’s 1974 record of the same name. Here’s the title track: Now who doesn’t like Bowie? This association bodes well, IMO. BTW, it was recently announced (like, last week) that this year Diamond Dogs is 40 years old and a picture disc is in the plans to recognize the anniversary. Photo credit: Radio.com “The 7-inch picture disc comes June 17 and features the six-minute “Diamond Dogs” on its A-side. On the flip side, it’ll feature a 2005 mix of the tune, referred to as the David Live mix, originally recorded live at Philadelphia’s Tower Theater in ’74 by Tony Visconti.” Pretty cool. man. They’ve been working very hard cleaning out the current space, and that’s been quite a job. Here’s a recent shot that John shared on Twitter.
