Made with flour and San Marzano tomatoes direct from Italy and fresh mozzarella cheese, quality pizza from Sac’s Place on Broadway has been a neighborhood staple. Brothers Anthony and Domenico Sacramone first opened the restaurant in 1989 to share family recipes from the Abruzzo region of Italy. They’ve been at their current 25-41 Broadway location for 30 years, and now will be moving to a rather unique new spot: the old George’s Restaurant space at Kaufman Astoria Studios—which apparently shut down over Memorial Day Weekend.

An email from Anthony and Domenico was shared with us about the decision to move. After all these years at their spot on the corner of 29th St and Broadway, Sac’s Place was not being offered a new lease, and therefore needed to find a new location. Their top priority was staying in Astoria, as their “customers are family to us.”

They’ll continue to serve their renowned pizzas and handmade pastas at the Kaufman Astoria spot, but will also have more space to expand, including a private room for personal or corporate events, and hope to host their own Chef’s Tables events.

The team is excited for new beginnings in such a historic Astoria space, but are sad to leave their own historic location as well. Here’s a direct quote from the brothers:

As excited as we are for our new home, we can’t help but be sentimental about leaving our corner at 29th and Broadway – there are so many good memories there. Couples have gotten engaged there. We’ve seen our customers’ kids grow up and even bring their kids in now. Tony Bennett coming to jazz night. Our customers gathered there on the night of September 11th, looking for community and comfort. We’ve had some incredible parties, including the annual pig roasts that became neighborhood events.
And, above all, we’ll remember our late mother’s devotion to it – she spent almost every day of the past 30 years there before she passed away this spring.

The current location will close July 21, and they’ll be running specials throughout the last month of July that they’ll be announcing on their Facebook page soon. They expect the new space to be open sometime in August, date TBD.

I went to the soft re-opening last Wednesday and it was packed with all us Sac’s-loving folks. Read my review on September 25th and all others in the Western Queens Gazette.

I look forward to finding out what sort of overpriced, poorly built condos are on the mind of the owner if that space. Given that Lanzee closed years ago and no one has taken that space, it seems to me that there is some sort of plan to sell as much of that block off as possible in one chunk and build some sort of fugly condo building. They must be so disappointed that The Strand re-opened. I suppose we should just be glad that Sac’s is able to stay in the neighborhood at all at this point.
