Photo credit: Nicole Panettieri A new restaurant has arrived on Ditmars called Chop Chop Grub Shop, which opened a couple of weeks ago. I was first alerted to it when my friend C-J talked about their all day brunch and a delicious dinner he had. In his words, “In short, the food is really terrific! I had the pancakes and chicken and my husband had the duck sandwich. The skewer and deviled egg appetizers were also great! Service is on point and they will have their liquor license soon.” It’s located in the old Nature’s Taste location, which we profiled back in 2014—it seemed that their tenure on Ditmars was full of fits and starts, though the semi-private buying club did ok. Chop Chop Grub Shop originally was in business in Crown Heights Brooklyn (known for their Cuban sandwich, which is on the Astoria menu, too) and closed there in December 2014 after being open for about a year. During that time they experienced some controversy, which they apologized for, and I hope by now they’ve learned not to make the same mistake twice. Here is how they see themselves: “Chop Chop Grub Shop is a modern American lunch counter and takeout eatery in Astoria, Queens, focusing on scratch cooking, locality and seasonality. Freshness is our top priority, reflected in our petite kitchen, with an emphasis on top quality ingredients and perfectionistic execution. Chef Malcom Sanz, using his internationally influenced palate—New York City by way of Argentina, Toronto and Atlanta– and deep-rooted passion for good food, creates a diverse and delectable menu” Intrepid correspondent Nicole from The Brass Owl sent us some photos of their menus as posted—brunch and other food they offer. It’s the BEST BURGER I’ve ever had in Astoria, Queens (5 year resident). Brought a friend there and the same response I’ve had, he had. It’s a raucous-menagerie-carnival in your mouth.
