I had the pleasure to sit down with Nicole Panettieri this morning and chat about her new shop, The Brass Owl. In fact, we met at newly opened 60 Beans for this conversation (we both love the iced apricot tea, BTW); Ditmars sure is home to many changes, and we think The Brass Owl is a good one. Located at 36-19 Ditmars Blvd, they’ll be selling shoes, jewelry, and other accessories. She really likes owls and vintage, which served as the source for the shop’s name.

Nicole has 13 years in corporate buying, at both Macy’s and Ross (a mainly west coast clothing store). She loved the high-paced, intense atmosphere and being on the front end of fashion trends, but she knew she wanted to have her own place pretty early on. She comes from a family that runs retail clothing businesses, so between her professional and familiar exposure to this aspect of the business world, she is well-equipped to start her own awesome shop.

Look for stylish yet comfortable shoes of all kinds, including those with both heels and flats, ranging from ballet flats, to sandals, to boots and beyond. Jewelry will come from mostly independent makers, and we look forward to seeing some interesting things. Look also for handbags, scarves, socks (eventually), candles, and an assortment of gifty items, too.

Nicole loves Astoria and excited to open up shop here. She really feels at home here in the neighborhood, loves that Astorians are devoted to local, independent businesses, and finds the Ditmars area pretty exciting. There is somewhat of a dearth in clothing stores overall in Astoria, so she looks forward to helping fill that void. She plans on having monthly events at the shop, including a ladies night, trunk shows, and more. Overall, she wants you to have a great experience at the shop and will make it a very welcoming, comfortable atmosphere.

The Brass Owl will open for business on Saturday, September 13, and there will be refreshments to help celebrate. Store hours will be Tuesday-Friday, 11 a.m. to 8 pm.; Saturday, 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.; and Sunday, noon to 6 p.m. They will be closed on Mondays.

Welcome to the neighborhood, The Brass Owl! We are very much looking forward to spending some time there!
