Like so many other 24 year olds, I’m always trying to jump on the health-kick bandwagon. What do you do though when you live in a neighborhood with an abundance of options for absurdly delicious, and quite possibly not so healthy food and drinks? Never fear, Astoria is also a place where healthy eating can also fall under the same category of absurdly delicious.  Better yet, no matter what the situation—whether you’re in a hurry, want to cook, or even want to eat out with your friends—there’s always an option for clean eating!

This small organic store tucked away on 23rd Ave. and 31st is a total find. They have fresh in-store baked goods as well as smoothies, empanadas, salads, quinoa, rice, spinach pies, & more. The store offers a small variety of organic foods from produce, to frozen meats, to organic brown rice pastas. They also have cabinets of vitamins and other natural supplements.

5. Fusion Juice Bar:

The organic juice bar—owned by Grand Café—offers a variety of invigorating, fresh-pressed juices, smoothies and acai bowls.  They know just what kind of flavors to mix to get the most out of their natural ingredients.

Maizal is a great place to go if you’re hankering for a night out or brunch with friends. The Mexican restaurant offers a large variety of protein-packed and veggie-heavy meals made with very fresh ingredients. Skip the cheese and cream and you have a healthy, authentic, Mexican option.

This market is a fairly recent addition to the Astoria neighborhood. They have a flourishing variety of vegetables and fruit, as well as some other basics.

11. MP Taverna:

This Greek restaurant is one of my go-to’s for brunch. Although the drink deal is great, I love coming here for the different options of healthy breakfasts. They offer tasty baked eggs and delectable, light salads.

Sai Organics offers a little bit of most things. They have fresh produce, grains, nuts, as well as vegan sandwiches and baked goods. You’ll love the family-owned market not just for the heavenly food, but for the friendly atmosphere as well.

At Soho you can order the food on the go or sit down at their restaurant. Like Create, they offer food fast, but their salads are to die for. The portions are big and the ratio of veggie to meat to sauce is perfectly even.

If an organic store and a bodega had a baby it would be Tropical Deli & Grill. They have smoothies, salads, sandwiches, but also healthy snacks that you can grab in a hurry like Greek-yogurt protein shakes or chia seed vegetable chips.

Astoria’s most beloved fresh produce market has a huge selection of vegetables, fruits, and herbs.  Let’s not forget that they are also open 24/7.

This is a great local Italian restaurant that makes their dishes with some of the fresh produce from the Greenpoint Warehouse Roof Farm. The salads are delightful and the veggies are so rich and savory.  Don’t miss it!

Watawa is a perfect alternative for a healthy date night. They have some of the freshest sushi in Astoria and other options like steamed vegetables and steak that aren’t boring.

If you’re willing to make the trek to Long Island City, the Food Cellar is an organic superstore haven. They even have options like flaxseed flour and quinoa pasta. This is a great store for that item that is otherwise just impossible to find.

Vesta: Great food but how are vegetables slathered in a bacon vinaigrette “healthy”?!
