We thought we’d never be saying this, but man it’s hot out there.  It’s finally starting to feel like summer, which has inspired us to highlight local eateries that feature fun ways to cool down.  This chiller’s on us…

La Guli GelatoWhen the weather gets warm, we love to visit La Guli Pastry Shop for their delicious gelato and Italian ices.  Their flavors vary from classic to funky, including hazelnut, pistachio, chocolate caramel and more.  29-15 Ditmars Blvd, Astoria. 718.728.5612

milkflower-gelatoAnother yummy although unexpected place to get gelato is Milkflower.  I adore their non-traditional flavors such as black sesame, blueberry with fennel seeds, and fior di latte (a traditional Italian flavor with milk, cream and sugar).  Flavors change often, so you never know what you’re in for, but that’s the fun of it!  34-12 31st Avenue, Astoria. 718.204.1300

omonia-gelatoNot far from Milkflower is Omonia Next Door Bakery on Broadway.  Although I can’t say I’d recommend the pastries, the gelato is fabulous and I tend to favor simple flavors such as Nutella and pistachio, but once in a while it’s also fun to go fancy with something like a caramelized fig and biscoff scoop.  32-20 Broadway, Astoria. 718.274.6650

iced-coffee-astor-bake-shop-astoria-queensBesides gelato, how about some iced coffee?  There’s a lot of deliciousness going on in Astoria by way of caffeine these days.  From Kinship coffee to the Queens Kickshaw, Lockwood’s new Secret Garden pop-up and more, you won’t run out of options.

For a refreshing drink turned on its ear, check out the Astoria Flea for some interesting options.  One that especially caught our eye is the strawberry basil lemonade, served up by Frittering Away. 35-23 35th Avenue, Astoria.

rockaway-sez-john-beer-the-queens-kickshaw-astoriaSpeaking of the Flea, we love checking out the original LIC Flea as well.  Just around the corner from it is the Rockway Brewing Company storefront where you can get growlers of refreshing Summer Ale, 1875 Pale Ale, Old School IPA and more!  46-01 5th Street, LIC. 718.482.6528
