Perusing the Department of Buildings site, we’ve learned that paperwork has been filed for a 6-story mixed use building for the lot on the corner of 24th Avenue and 32nd Street. That lot has had an open parking lot and a building behind it for quite some time. The new building will have 22 units and 14 off-street parking spaces.

In this new building, 19,837 square feet will be residential, 4,610 will be commercial, and the same amount will be a “community facility” at the address of 24-08 32nd Street. There is a building already in that location, and it has going through some upgrades not long ago, so my guess is that they will not tear it down. Here’s what it looks like now:

This is what it looked like more or less when I moved to the neighborhood. I always wondered if they would do something with it.

It’s also up the street from the pedestrian walkway/park behind the Staples. This little area was also a place where people would let their dogs poop pretty much anywhere. Someone went so far as to put up a sign asking people to knock it off.

Anyway, on the corner of 24th Ave and 32nd Street is a parking lot/storage lot right now but that will change obviously. It’s going to be one of the taller buildings in the vicinity, taller than the 4-story building on the corner, but not as tall as the medical building monstrosity up around the corner on 31st Street. Regardless, a 6-story building will change the look and feel of this corner of the neighborhood, as well as bringing in probably 50+ new residents to a location that is essentially empty. Also around the corner is a new development adjacent to the Vallone School, which will also bring more residents to the area.

Great. I thought there were rules around building height restrictions in Astoria? Is that not so?
It’s getting crowded around here. We dont need another monster building. Is there no way to stop the madness?
