Here’s what on deck for the weekend, Astoria!

Friday, February 7

  • Watch a local theater production at the Astoria Performing Arts Center. Astoria’s main performing arts center is putting on the New York premier of JUMP, a play by Paula Vogel Prize Winner Charly Evon Simpson that follows two strangers on a bridge…and “shines light on how we process traumatic experiences to ultimately find peace.” Tickets here. February 7–23, 2020, Fri & Sat at 8PM / Sat & Sun at 3PM, 28-21 Steinway St, Astoria in the Kaufman Arts District
  • Figure out what you’re doing for Valentine’s Day. It’s only a week away! Check out our neighborhood roundup here.

Saturday, February 8

  • Head to NYC’s only Drag King Brunch! Read all about The Cake Boys here. Saturday, February 8 at 12 p.m. at Singlecut (19-33 37th St, Astoria).
  • Support local dancers at TAKE ROOT. The show, now in its eleventh season, pairs established artists to support “dance makers’ experimentation and growth.” This weekend’s performances are by PROJECT 44, which will present an all-male Boléro & premier their dance film #boyswearpink, an anti-bullying PSA; and Annalee Traylor, who will present four different works. Tickets here. February 7 & 8, 8 p.m., 37-24 24th St., Suites 211 + 212, Long Island City

Sunday, February 9

  • Critique Oscars fashion and sip champagne at your neighborhood bar! The Astorian (28-50 31st St.) is doing a Sauced Cinema event fittingly titled “The Saucedcars” in their private studio bar space where you can pose on a red carpet, enter your own nominations, and play drinking games throughout the show. The Local (41-04 31st Ave) will also be playing the show with sound on and will have ballots for guessing the winners.
  • Celebrate Trestle’s third anniversary with a ’90s throwback bash. There will be a $20 bottomless brunch special and ’90s jams, so be sure to wear your best #tbt outfit!

These particular events notwithstanding. I do like the idea of broader “what’s happening this weekend” and hope to see more of this kind of content regularly.
