New year, new changes in the neighborhood. One thing’s for sure: there are a LOT of openings. Unfortunately some of them involve chain restaurants or coffee shops being added to the mix.

As usual, let us know if you have more insight into these changes or if you’ve noticed any other goings-on!

OPENINGS

Food Emporium

IS NOW OPEN! After the long long wait, the grocery store on Broadway down the past the train is open. Hours are 7am-12am Monday-Saturday and 7am-10pm Sundays.

2910 Broadway

Pig Beach

We reported back in July that the Manhattan favorite Pig Beach was making its way to Astoria with a spot in the old Studio Square space. Well, we can officially confirm that this is true as they were petitioning for a liquor license at the most recent community board meeting. We’re in touch with the PR reps and an opening timeline hasn’t been revealed yet, but we’re betting it’ll make the perfect hangout spot come summer.

35-33 36th St., Queens

Chipotle

Yes, we know how upset people are about the delay on this, but all we can do is keep reporting the changes and updates as Chipotle communicates them to us. The latest is that it will open THIS MONTH. So keep your eye out.

31-73 Steinway Street

Lot-Less

A Lot-Less is going into the old Duane Reade on Broadway and Steinway. If you don’t know, Lot-Less Closeouts is a “growing retail chain that is taking the discount store cliché to a whole new level,” according to their website. They “focus on delivering quality, brand-name merchandise to the savvy, value conscious consumer at up to 80 percent off of original retail and department store prices. We are not off-priced- we are CLOSEOUT SPECIALISTS. You will find incredible bargains EVERY TIME.” There are apparently 10 locations in the NY Metro/NJ area, with the newest in Union Square. Have you been to one?

Luxury Consignment

Sighted on 23rd Ave: might be a great new spot for picking up amazing vintage finds?

Speaking of shopping, this looks like a fun new place to your retail fix! You can check their vibes on Insta here, and they let us know via email that they are “a concepts store that evolves each month to feature up and coming artists, local brands, and companies with a social and eco-conscious message- something different each month to get excited about!” Sounds fun.

36-12 34th Ave

Fish Market Restaurant
A new seafood place on 28th between 33-34th is open, called Fish Market Restaurant. A peek in the window reveals a row boat seafood cooler and the menu looks Greek.
33-10 28th Ave

La Mian Lounge
On Broadway is now open. Seamless and Grub Hub show a menu with noodles, dumplings, and “Chinese Country Style BBQ Skewers.” but let us know if you check it out.

25-12 Broadway

And for a rapid fire round of chains:
  • Dunkin is going into the old Fresko spot on 30th (so, just moving down a few doors)
  • Taco Bell is reportedly open on 31st St. and 23rd Ave

CLOSINGS

Crescent & Vine

Crescent & Vine on Ditmars is closing up shop on January 12. Known for their wine, beer and solid music selection, the local watering hole will no doubt be missed.

25-03 Ditmars Blvd

Laundromat

Just your average neighborhood laundromat, but it was apparently owned by the same man for 43 years and is well-loved by locals. Sorry to see it go.

24th x 28th

Tea Plus

Tea Plus on 31st Ave has turned into Savage Sicko, which promises juices and vegan bites according to its website and Instagram. It has an environmentally-friendly mission as the name is inspired by endangered sharks.

37-10 31st Ave

RUMORS

Old Chase Bank Space

This space has been empty for a while, but there are finally building permits in the windows. We’re not sure what it’s going to be yet, but hopefully it will shake up business on Broadway, after a lot of reported closings last time.

32-12 Broadway

CTown on 24th Ave

We heard that this store may be opening soon…will keep you updated as we know any further details.

Metro Taqueria

Signage is finally up for the taco place between Lite Bites and Pollos Mario on Broadway between Steinway and 41st Street. It’s going to be called “Metro Taqueria.” It looks like there is also a Metro Taco in Forest Hills, but no direct connection has been made as of yet. We reached out to the contact  number for more details.

Any news on Hutch on 31st Ave and 35th Street? Some sluthing leads me to believe its a bar (I found the graffiti artist on instagram who painted it) but the sign looks more ‘coffee shop.’ Anyone know anything? Thanks!

Also, the Culinary Noodle Kitchen on 30th Ave and 42nd St has been re-invented as Ma LaLa Chinese… looks about the same inside though.
