Astoria Pool Will Not Open This Summer 3 Plans for A Perfect Summer Day in Astoria A brewery crawl seems to strike the perfect balance between summer and fall: you can enjoy refreshing pints, either outside in the sun or cozied up indoors . And what better month to do that in than September? We mapped out a one-day plan for checking out all of the LIC and Astoria Breweries: Whether you choose to walk, bike, Uber, bus or subway in between, now that’s up to you! Credit to Google Maps. SingleCut Beersmiths: 19-33 37th St, Queens, NY 11105 On Tap: JÅN ALPINE WHITE LAGER; ERIC MORE COWBELL! CHOCOLATE MILK STOUT; 18-WATT IPA; WEIRD & GILLY IPA; HALF-STACK IPA; KIM HIBISCUS SOUR LAGER; SOFTLY SPOKEN MAGIC SPELLS IIPA; PLAINTOP PILSNER; HOP SOUNDS DRY-HOPPED ALE Of note: If you’re starting in Astoria, the furthest brewery is SingleCut Beersmiths. Though you may have tried their brews on tap at local bars, it’s worth visiting the taproom in person. With indoor and outdoor seating, board games and food vendors, it’s the perfect chill spot for a weekend afternoon. ICONYC Brewing Co.: 5-13 34th Ave, Astoria, NY 11101 Of note: With two locations now (we’ll shout-out the new spot in LIC), you don’t have to stop here, but it provides a nice point in between Astoria and LIC. The original location is tiny, but with large windows it’s perfect for people-watching on a quiet block, and the aluminum-printed bar (not sure if that is exactly what it is but that’s what it looks like!) makes for a picturesque backdrop. LIC Beer Project: 39-28 23rd St, Long Island City, NY 11101 On Tap: Beer Without Beards Lager; Darkness Ventures Lager; Party Crasher IPA; SAMO IPA; Kingsguard IPA; Linear Dimension IPA; Hollows IPA; Cannons IPA; Cosmic Kiss IPA; Dubs Stout Stout Credit to LIC Beer Project. Big aLICe Brewing: 8-08 43rd Rd, Long Island City, NY 11101 On Tap: Full List Here Of note: The second, larger ICONYC location is right near here (at 43-63 11TH ST), and though not nearby, big aLICe also recently opened a new barrel room in Industry City, Brooklyn that’s worth checking out if you’re near the area (at 52 34th St, Brooklyn). Rockaway Brewing: 46-01 5th St, Long Island City, NY 11101 On Tap: Rockaway Regrettable Haircut DIPA; Rockaway Cool Hand Cuke Sour; Rockaway Hawaiian Pizza Double Slice Double IPA; Rockaway Hawaiian Pizza v.6 IPA; Rockaway Black Gold Stout Fifth Hammer: 10-28 46th Ave, Long Island City, NY 11101 On Tap: Full List Here. Of note: Though not breweries, fellow brew-centric pubs Alewife (95-14 51st Ave, LIC) and Bierocracy (12-23 Jackson Ave, LIC) are right nearby for beer-lovers. Credit to Fifth Hammer Brewing. So for example those making there way from ICON Brewery toward Big Alis and LIC, try Sunswick near the Museum of Moving Image on 35th Ave or for a great themed bar Madame Marie’s with its Coney-Island Asbury Park cut outs you can pose and a good selection of brews and cocktails on Broadway – Sunswick is a short walk from the 36tn Ave N and W, Madame Maries’ from the Broadway Station and Steinway. . They also have a nice jukebox. When you are at Rockaway and you want to get some Art and some bar food with a great view, stop at Plaxall Gallery and then Anable Basin Bar – the latter has stunning views and a wonderfully sunny outdoor area perfect from late Spring to early Fall. Plaxall Gallery always has wonderful exhibitions and ocassional music concerts. Finally I hope you do what I could best call a “dive ” bar walk. The bars aren’t necessarily “divey” in the old sense but fun, laid back somewhat no frills and relatively cheap. 36th Ave has Veronicas and Mad Donkey (and some inexpensive eating options near by – if you feel something a little more “upscale” without it being so Burger and Brew is good and offers Actoria once a week). On Broadway, I like Doyle’s Corner for being an old school Irish bar with a great selection on the jukebox and ample bar food. If you want a slice of history with furnishings from the 40s – Kelly’s off Crescent and on 31st Ave is one I love going to – a reallly charming place. THere are so many more bars along the way, eateries and places worth checking out so as you do this tour take the time to wander and explore alittle – for example walking from ICON head down 34th Ave to see check out the Brasilian buffet – one of the best and the old Greek plasterer shop before stopping off at the Entenmann’s discount store to grab a deal on English muffins. Reply Matt Archambault September 6th, 2019 Don’t forget ICONYC’s new taproom with a beer garden between 11th and 12th St near Big Alice. Also don’t forget Alewife – that brewpub always has more than 10 of their own beers on tap. Reply Claire Leaden September 8th, 2019 Included those in the “of note” descriptions – definitely perfect for beer-lovers! Reply Silviwerner September 5th, 2019 ICONYC brewery in LIC is the best….great flavors….great atmosphere….must visit this place.
