First Look’s Destination Queens – VIDEO Discovering the Welling Court Mural Project can feel like you just accidentally stumbled into another, utterly remarkable world. A world with bright colors, crafted words, and the feeling of strolling through a beautiful art galley while simply walking down your street. The project originally started in 2009 when members of the Welling Court community attended Ad Hoc Art’s Bushwick Open Air Gallery, and then asked them to mimic the same artistry in their own Astoria neighborhood. The first multi-block mural project that occurred in May 2010 comprised over 40 murals, and now there are over 140 works by artists from around the corner and around the world. The murals span 30th Ave down at 12 St and Welling Ct. It “provides new arrays of visual experiences that change how people experience and interact with their environment,” as their website says. Every June the group commissions new artists to add to the gallery or redo older works, and this year’s celebration is taking place tomorrow, June 8 from 12 to 7 p.m. Support local art projects and enjoy fantastic visuals all for FREE (oh, and not going to lie–it’ll make awesome social content)! To get there by public transportation, take the N or W train to 30th Ave. Then go west down 30th Ave to 12th St. by a) walking 10-15 minutes or; b) taking the Q18 Bus. By car, type “11-98 Welling Ct” into your GPS. For more info on this year’s artists, click here and/or follow along on social.
