Readers were dismayed last week to see that neighborhood staple Vaccaro’s Bakery & Cafe was CLOSED. The bakery, located at 28-05 Steinway Street in Astoria, opened in 1981 and has been serving the community with Italian desserts and fresh baked bread daily for over 30 years.

Though rumors were circulating about it going out of business, fortunately the Vaccaro’s name is here to stay—just not in the same storefront.

The owners let us know they had to close the Steinway location because the landlord of the building had some illegal gas lines and no permits for his boilers and water heaters. DOB had to shut off the gas and electric to the entire building and won’t be able to restore until the landlord rebuilds his lines and gets legal permits. They said “it’s a pretty sticky situation.”

Still, they have two locations they are currently looking atone in Astoria and the other in Williamsburg. They haven’t decided yet, but will announce it as soon as they do.
Currently they’re still vending at street fairs, festivals and selling wholesale.
As such a neighborhood institution, we hope they choose the Astoria spot! We’ll let you know as soon as we hear about the new location. What are your thoughts?

why don’t they move back into the building they previously had a space in on Astoria blvd?
there’s plenty of choices on steinway st and all over Astoria. with our overvalued retail there should be a landlord willing to take a deal to fill their vacant space.

Please stay in Astoria. Go Broadway, there are a lot of empty spots over there.
