There’s been quite a bit of buzz about all the new businesses and planned construction on 31st Street near the Ditmars station, and just as many opinions about what that means for the neighborhood. But we can now announce that TJ Maxx is opening on 31st Street in spring of 2019.

The boxy new building that went up over the past year on the west side of 31st Street near the corner of Ditmars (22-06 31st Street) has been the source of much speculation. Hypotheses about its fate have included Target, Marshalls, and, of course, Trader Joe’s.

Well now we know, at least one floor is not going to be a Trader Joe’s. (In fact, there’s no reason to believe Astoria is getting a Trader Joe’s at all.)

New signs that went up today announced that the building will be home a TJ Maxx, opening spring 2019. We reported earlier that Marshalls would be opening in the space, but it seems now that it’s going to be a TJ Maxx instead. (Marshalls and TJ Maxx have the same parent company.) We’re still unclear how many floors the store will end up occupying in the 3-story building, although it looks like the ground floor may still be for rent.

Meanwhile, Target is still slated to move in across the street. Both TJ Maxx and Target sell clothing, accessories, and home goods. It will be interesting to see if one becomes more popular than the other. Another thing we’ll have to see is if their presence affects other, smaller businesses in the area, like Willow Road, Home Comforts, Inside Astoria, The Brass Owl, and Buffalo Exchange.

What are your thoughts on the new addition(s) to the area?

I’m excited. It makes shopping so much easier without having to go into the city with a stroller. Now we need a Trader Joe’s and I’m set. Gentrification sucks but makes my life easier with kids.
