Lucky for Astoria night owls, Sweet Afton will be introducing a late night taco menu tonight, and will be offering them up every night going forward from 12:30am-3:30am. The mastermind behind the new deliciousness is Nick Testa, the new chef for both Sweet Afton and The Bonnie. His resume is impressive: after getting his culinary start working at Italian delis in Westchester, (he even owned his own at the young age of twenty!) he later served as an assistant food stylist for Rocco DiSpirito, and was mentored by chef Ryan Skeen. We’re excited to see what exciting changes he brings to two local beloved spots. Starting with tacos is a good sign! Tacos will be $5 each, and adding avocado will be an extra $2. Here are your choices for filling combinations: -Seared steak – pickled onions, radish, chimichurri -Chorizo – scallion, cilantro, lettuce, Creama -Seasonal vegetable – queso fresco, pepitas, picked jalapeños -Fried fish – Cabbage, Chipotle Crema, Cilantro, Pickled Onions Who else is excited? As Pete says, El Ray and many other GREAT tacos are in the area for $2.50-$3.50 each. I’m not even going to touch the topic of chopped cheese/cultural appopriation, but I’m sure someone might. My only other comparison for $5 tacos is Empellon al pastor in EV, and Alex Stupak has multiple restaurants and has been doing Mexican cuisine for a long time (lest we don’t forget his time at wd~50), so sure, I’d give his $5 taco a shot. No offense to Nick Testa, I enjoy the food at both Sweet Afton and The Bonnie, but that’s a hefty price to pay for a taco (at 2am when I’m already buzzed). Reply Pete J.
