Did you know August 31 is International Bacon Day? Every day is a great day to indulge in the salty, meaty treat, but just in case you need an extra nudge, here it is. Our neighborhood has no shortage of unique, unexpected ways to get your bacon fix, so check out our list of some favorites!

Turducken Sandwich – William Hallet

Turducken: not just for Thanksgiving anymore.

Turducken: not just for Thanksgiving anymore.

This monstrous sandwich combines ground turkey, duck, and chicken, and then ups the ante by piling on thick slabs of bacon and some bourbon ketchup. Bring your appetite to take this one on!

A high-quality bratwurst is awesome on its own, but when you add crispy bacon, carmelized onions, pickled chipotle, and a homemade BBQ sauce, you get the tour-de-force that is The Cowboy.

Bacon-wrapped dates are probably my favorite appetizer. I’ve tried to make them on my own so many times, but they just never come out as delicious as they do in restaurants. At Diwine, bacon-wrapped dates are paired with deviled eggs in this fancy starter.

As we’ve previously mentioned, this unexpected dish is just plain awesome. Juicy chicken, a sweet cereal coating, and a spicy, bacon-y sauce make this Queens Comfort classic a must-try.

I’m not sure if I’ve ever visited The Shady Lady without ordering their mac and cheese: it’s rich, creamy, and always hits the spot. The carbonara version, with bacon and prosciutto, adds a whole extra depth of smoky flavor.

Astoria has a pretty impressive selection of burgers, but Blackbird’s kicks it up a notch with their Q18 burger. It’s a 50/50 combination of bacon meat and chop meat, and a rite of passage for bacon lovers of the borough. Have you tried it yet?

Let’s end on a sweet note, shall we? Sage General Store offers a sweet and savory dessert that combines two of the food world’s most glorious items: bacon and chocolate. Visiting here without ordering it just seems irresponsible.
