If Sunday night’s Tony Awards left you itching to see live theater, but you’re not ready to shell out big Broadway bucks, we have good news! Astoria’s Ophelia Theatre Group has announced that their latest production, Floyd Collins, is opening this Friday, June 12, and will play eight performances right in our neighborhood.

Floyd Collins is a contemporary musical that opened off-Broadway in 1996. Despite its short run, the show received critical acclaim and has lived on in regional and international productions. Here’s a quick plot synopsis:

“In 1925, while chasing a dream of fame and fortune by turning a Kentucky cave into a tourist attraction, Floyd Collins himself became the attraction when he got trapped 200 feet underground. Alone but for sporadic contact with the outside world, Floyd fought for his sanity and ultimately his life as the rescue effort above exploded into the first genuine media circus. Reporters and gawkers from across the country descended on the property, fueling the hysteria and manipulating the nation into holding its collective breath. This haunting musical – one of the most acclaimed in recent years – tells the transcendent tale of a true American dreamer.”

Ophelia Theatre Group will be highlighting the intimacy of this musical by turning its newly renovated black box theater into an immersive cabaret space. Seating is very limited, (Opening Night is already sold out!) so don’t hesitate to get your tickets for the rest of the run! Friday and Saturday shows are $18, while Sundays’ are $18 online or “pay what you wish” at the door, pending availability.
