Hearkening back to Bareburger when it was brand new.

We’re pleased to have a solid confirmation from the folks at Bareburger regarding the rumored connection they have with the now shuttered Athens Cafe. They are very excited about this space and are looking forward to introducing their new concept to 30th Avenue and greater Astoria (and beyond, most likely). Here’s the skinny from Bareburger:

“The Athens cafe location has been an iconic part of the Astoria community for years. Bareburger group saw an opportunity to inject some new life and an exciting new concept into a space abound with possibilities.”

Now, what that “exciting new concept” is going to be is unclear, as they are admittedly still very early in the process. We’ll keep in touch with them on this and bring you news as it comes.

NB for clarity: The 31st Avenue Bareburger will not close. The old Athens Cafe location is a totally new venture with a new concept.

What’s with all the Bareburger hate? They started in Astoria & they’re taking over NYC, and need I remind about the no animals tortured for burgers part? Everyone’s allowed their two cents, of course, but I say good on BB for once again choosing Astoria as a springboard for their new concept. And just about anything’s better than “Sweet Athens”, as the new owners renamed the joint as they crashed it into the rubble of mediocrity.

I concur. What makes us think their 30th Ave concept will have any better service or menu than their original spot? This place is high traffic, very visible and they cannot afford to be anything less than great, with the $30k per month rent they are paying. I’ll pass on this one until I hear amazing feedback about it. Anyone wanna hop on the train to Ditmars for a bite at Cyclades?

I really hope they don’t open another standard Bareburger there. The place has consistently bad service, overpriced and overcomplicated burgers, and there is already a solid burger spot, Burger Club, across the street. Not excited about the news.

It doesn’t sound like they will – this restaurant will have a “new concept.” Burger Club has many fans, too!
