Talk about a delicious challenge. There are three cupcake stops within the race, which is two laps around the park (seriously, it’s about 1.5 miles around Astoria Park, pretty impressive). The cupcakes will be provided by local bakery Sweets First. Actually, I had one of their mini cupcakes at The Brass Owl’s opening party and they were pretty tasty. Also, post-race participants will be able to enjoy free food and drink at Rocky McBride’s just up 23rd Ave from the park. Photo credit: NYC Cupcake Run If you’re wondering what kind of person would come up with the idea of combining cupcakes and running, that would be Jason Feirman, who founded the NYC Pizza Run in 2010 (yes, that involves running and eating pizza, too). He tells us a little bit about the origins of the Cupcake Run: “I love eating and I love running, so back in 2010 I decided to combine these passions into a one of a kind New York City experience. Because of my blog, pizza seemed like a logical food choice, but after the success of the NYC Pizza Run, I decided to add a second run for people who have a bit more of a sweet tooth.” During the inaugural Cupcake Run last year, the 150 slots were snapped up right-quick, so Feirman has expanded the number of entries this year to 200. It costs $55 to register ($50 through October 1st) and with that you’ll get an official NYC Cupcake Run t-shirt, race bib, the three cupcakes for eating during the race, a cupcake gift bag, and the aforementioned free drink & food after the race at Rocky McBrides. Part of the proceeds from the race will go to New York Cares, who volunteer often in Astoria Park. If you’re interested in running in the race, you can register here. And if you’d like to see the race from last year, head to this photoset.
