This week, Emily and I had the pleasure to attend one of the Cider Dinners at The Queens Kickshaw. It was four courses of absolute deliciousness: Baby kale salad with lemon-parm vinaigrette, granny smith apple, hazelnuts -w- Farnum Hill Extra Dry Poached egg in crispy potato nest, petite sorrel, mushroom-pinenut pesto -w- Scrumpy in the Gunks Corn tortellini with succotash and tomato broth -w- Eve’s Sow the Seeds Cheese plate with accompaniments -w- Castanon Sidra Natural Poached pear, dulce de leche, cider sorbet -w- Virtue Ledbury On top of that, we got to sample a flight of ciders from Descendant Cider, the first cidery in NYC! We tried the dry, semi dry, apple pear, and pomegranate hibiscus ciders. Personally, the dry was my favorite. The menu. We started with this delicious watermelon shrub shot. The Farnum Hill Extra Dry cider. The fabulous kale salad with a very fruity vinaigrette. Scrumpy in the Gunks – definitely earthy. Poached egg in crispy potato nest, petite sorrel, and mushroom-pinenut pesto The flight of Descendant Ciders! Eve’s Sow the Seeds cider. Classic cider taste. The glorious Corn tortellini. Castanon Sidra Natural and Virtue Ledbury ciders. Wonderful cheeses with accompaniments, including fig jam, pistachio brittle, and champagne grapes. The one in the foreground is washed with cider. Poached pear, dulce de leche, and cider sorbet. A perfectly light end to the meal. We hope those who attended loved it as much as we did. For both of us the corn tortellini was a serious highlight, tasting very much like summer. The filling had corn puree and cream in it, and it was bursting with flavor. The amounts served in each course was also just perfect. Thanks so much for a great meal, Kickshaw folks!
