Earlier this month, we got a question from a WHA reader about Crehan’s Pub and what the heck was going on there.

Other Astorians are starting to wonder what is up with the place, which will now be known as The Local (still a bar). Case in point this tweet from yesterday:

Here is what our friend Matt of the Windsor Garden Facebook page had to say about The Local:

A new bar called The Local is opening soon on 31st Avenue and 41st St after a complete renovation and a new draft system. There’s even a modest but nice back garden!

Matt also tells us that the new owners—who’ve owned the space for about a year now—are nice guys looking to make the place a little more appealing to a broader population in Astoria. Some of the aforementioned renovations include a total re-do from floor to ceiling, and installation of a commercial AC unit to replace the window A/C units that have been in place for a while. One of the reasons they did that is to cut down on noise for their neighbors (plus, it’s probably more efficient).

They’ve also installed 10 draft lines, which means a likelihood of craft beer. Previously at Crehan’s there were only a few taps.

I had walked past Crehan’s over the years and always wondered about its dive bar status. I always thought it was in the category of great divey local spots like Veronica’s, Kelly’s, and O’Hanlon’s—which, by the way, was the only spot within a 5 block radius that showed one of Mariano Rivera’s last games with the Yankees. Props to them, and I will always love them for that. Anyway, looks like The Local is moving past the dive bar vibe. We look forward to checking it out.

Creehan’s was a great bar, now they got hipsters ruining the Hood, with their spoiled high attitudes. They got money but not enough to live in Manhattan, so they ruin Astoria and LIC.

When I first moved to 41st Street 9 years ago, my aunt specifically told me to NEVER go to Creehan’s. Like Mo, I often saw people throwing up outside, people obviously selling drugs, and even a woman bleeding after falling down drunk from the top step. That place was a sh*thole. I am glad that I eventually moved from around the corner and that it closed down. Let’s hope the new bar doesn’t attract the same clientele!

I used to live around the corner from Creehan’s and it was gross. There were frequently people puking out front on the sidewalk. My roommate and I went there shortly after moving in and we didn’t even stay to order drinks. Place was nasty. Glad to see it got a face-lift!
