While waiting for my train to arrive last Friday, I ran into Lynne Serpe, local Astorian, urban gardener, swimmer extraordinaire, and Green Party candidate for City Council. Yes, she is one of the people running for the Astoria City Council seat that will be vacated this year (Peter Vallone term limits out this time around). She mentioned to me that she was having a kickoff event at Pachanga Patterson for her campaign, and sent me the info on it. Here are the details:
LYNNE SERPE FOR CITY COUNCIL CAMPAIGN KICKOFF ON JUNE 5TH
Astoria — Green Party candidate Lynne Serpe will hold her City Council campaign kickoff at Pachanga Patterson (33-17 31st Avenue) onWednesday, June 5th from 7-9pm.
Lynne Serpe ran for City Council in 2009 against incumbent Peter Vallone, Jr and received 24% of the vote. Currently, she is the project consultant for the Greening Libraries Initiative at Queens Library and an independent election administrator. Lynne is the co-founder of Triple R Events: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle and an active member of Two Coves Community Garden and many other local organizations.
She is running on a platform that urges sustainable development, access to healthy food, expanded compost and recycling programs, energy efficiency and good, green jobs.
he is also a strong advocate for election reforms such as Instant Runoff Voting, proportional representation and Intro 410. No stranger to government, Lynne worked for the New Zealand Parliament as their voting system reform coordinator. She was Deputy Director of the Political Reform Program of the New America Foundation and was a Senior Analyst for FairVote.
Lynne is kicking off her campaign on World Environment Day. This year’s anti-food waste theme of “Think. Eat. Save” encourages people to reduce their foodprint.
Perhaps we’ll see you there!
Thank you for the kind words. It looks we’ll have great weather to enjoy the back patio garden (fingers crossed).
