Mark your calendars—MOMI is presenting what will no doubt be a fantastic exhibition devoted to the life and work of the great American director, Martin Scorsese, from December 11–April 23, 2017. Not only will there be a film series—complete with personal appearances—there will be an exhibition of artifacts from his filmmaking career. More from MOMI about this aspect of the exhibit, which will take place in the Changing Exhibitions Gallery:

“Drawing extensively from Scorsese’s own collection, the exhibition includes production material from his key films, objects from his childhood, behind-the-scenes images, and large-scale projections of scenes from his work. It is organized thematically: Family, Brothers, Men and Women, Lonely Heroes, New York, Cinema, Cinematography, Editing, and Music.”

And more about the collection of films that will be screened:

“During the run of the exhibition, the Museum will present a comprehensive retrospective of the director’s work, with the best available film prints and restored versions of his films, supplemented with personal appearances. Additional screenings will feature a selection from the hundreds of classic movies restored by the Film Foundation under Scorsese’s supervision, and a selection of films that formed his lifelong love of cinema.”

One particularly notable aspect of the exhibition is that it will feature material from his upcoming movie, Silence, “an adaptation of Shusaku Endo’s celebrated novel about Christian missionaries in seventeenth-century Japan.” This film opens in theaters in time around Christmas, on December 23.

The exhibition opens with Martin Scorsese in the 21st Century (runs December 16-24). It features his six films made after 2000: The Departed, Gangs of New York, Shutter Island, The Aviator, Hugo, and The Wolf of Wall Street. Additionally, there will a selection of classic films screened that were restored by the Film Foundation under Scorsese’s supervision, as well as films that formed his lifelong love of cinema.

For any film fan, this is a must-see series and exhibit. Definitely plan on coming—these sorts of months-long events are some of the things MOMI does best, and we are pretty excited about it all!
