Sustainable Seafood Market Greenpoint Fish & Lobster Co. Arrives in LIC

Have you been to the new fish market in LIC? DNAinfo reports that Greenpoint Fish & Lobster Co. has opened a fresh fish market on 48th Avenue in LIC. This is their second location and they are really happy to be in LIC.

Their location at 5-43 48th Avenue is in the Solarium condo building that was erected in 2009. On the ground floor there are a number of retail spaces—Greenpoint Fish & Lobster Co. moved into the old location of Uncle Louie G’s/Brooklyn Cupcake. As an aside, there were numerous times I wanted to check out the offerings at Brooklyn Cupcake but they were never open; Uncle Louie G’s makes terrible ice cream and ices so personally I do not lament their disappearance from the LIC food scene. No doubt the new fish market will do better there. Anyway…

The fish from Greenpoint Fish & Lobster Co. is sustainably sourced, and co-owner Adam Geringer-Dunn believes there is a real demand for fish caught in this way. Sustainably sourced fish usually includes fish that is pole-caught, the use of smaller set nets, and the like; longline fishing and the dreadful practice of industrial trawling is about as far from sustainability as you can get, so you can bet the fish won’t be caught in these ways. The LIC location will sell “domestic, wild-caught and locally sourced seafood” from “a close network of purveyors and fishermen.”

More on the market itself and what you can expect:

Long Island City store will have a bigger fresh fish case than its Brooklyn predecessor and more refrigerator space for grab-and-go items that will change weekly. These dishes are expected to include lobster rolls, seafood pot pies, lobster potato salad, soups and chowders. There will be a takeout window where customers can grab their food to go, Geringer-Dunn said. The store will also sell cookbooks, seafood utensils, specialty salts, spices, condiments and sauces, including the Thai curry mussel sauce that it serves at the Greenpoint restaurant.
