Twitter Facebook Email Print Labor Day Weekend is the unofficial conclusion of summer (Because the official end of summer party is taking place at Sek’end Sun, hosted by us!) so let’s take advantage of all the summery goodness the neighborhood has to offer this weekend. Here are some ideas: Eat and Drink Outdoors Dining and drinking al fresco is pretty much the official summer activity for Astoria, and there’s no shortage of great places to do it. One of our favorite strategies is to grab a pizza from Milkflower and eat it in the backyard of Diamond Dogs: two great Astoria spots in one! Other awesome outdoor options include Leng Thai, No5 at Studio Nova, Sek’end Sun, Sweet Afton, and Mar’s Bar. Listen To (and Buy) Some Tunes at HiFi Records On Saturday night, HiFi Records will be hosting an album release party for local rockers The Voms, and you’re invited! Starting at 7:30pm, the night will be full of great live music, the chance to purchase great vinyl, and FREE beer from Singlecut. If you can’t make it on Saturday, HiFi is having a great sale all weekend, with 10%-25% off the whole store. Great chance to buy some tunes for any end-of-summer-BBQ you attend or host! Shop Local Sure, all the big retailers are having sales, but why not check out some local spots to get your shopping on? The Brass Owl is throwing a major big clearance blow out: Shoppers will receive an additional 40% off clearance and get 10% off entire stock, which can result in prices 80%(!!) off original stock. It’s also a cool time to check out The Little Soap Shop’s new location! Enjoy brunch/lunch…on a Monday! The Bonnie’s Bar Garden, Photo Courtesy of Oleg March Since many folks will have Monday off (It is Labor Day, after all!) many of our favorite local spots will be serving their brunch menu on 9/5. Some highlights include Sac’s Place and Oliver’s, who will be serving their beloved brunch specialties, and The Bonnie, who will open at 11am and offer up some stellar lunch specials. (Select drafts for $5, well drinks for $6, house wine for $6 and a few specialty cocktails for $7. This includes the dirty pickle martini, Bonnie punch, and garden sangria!) The Great Astoria Gut-Off: The Biggest Loser IRL On Monday, Singlecut Beersmiths will be hosting the closing event for the 6th Annual Great Astoria Gut-Off, the culmination of a summer-long event where participants do their best to slim down and get healthy. Folks who signed up Memorial Day Weekend will have their final weigh in at Singlecut, and the crowd will cheer them on and vote for a winner. It’s a cool way to drink some beer and support local people making a healthy change! Get Your BBQ On The Ditty will be hosting a Labor Day Backyard Hip Hop BBQ on Monday, starting at 11:30am. They’ll have a DJ, kiddie pool, contests for the best dressed, beer pong, and of course, tons of food. You can expect ribs, sausage and peppers, skirt steak, corn, freeze pops, and watermelon jello shots. Come hungry, and ready for a party. Hang Out at a Beer Garden Is there a better time than a three-day weekend to enjoy some brews at a beer garden? I don’t think so. Don’t miss your chance to enjoy one of the final weekends of outdoor drinking weather at either The Bohemian or Studio Square beer garden before pumpkin spice latte season kicks in. Monday is an especially awesome time to visit The Bohemian Hall and Beer Garden, as they’ll be opening at 12pm and serving up $1 hot dogs and $15 pitchers of Carlsberg beer. Cheers! Work Up A Sweat Wonderful views along the Socrates waterfront. The weather isn’t supposed to be TOO hot this weekend, so take advantage and go for a run in your favorite Astoria park. I’ve been all about running through Socrates Sculpture Park lately in preparation for The Brew Hop 5k, where WHA will be representing with a team. There’s still time to sign up, and we’ve got AWESOME prizes :) How will you be celebrating the weekend? Tell us on Facebook and in the comments!
