On Friday, June 5, the Broom Tree Theatre welcomes JD Cerna as he performs his GLAAD-nominated one-man show Not as Cute as Picture. This critically acclaimed show has received praise from outlets like the Washington Post and the NY Daily News, and will kick off Queens Pride with next week’s performance.
Not as Cute as Picture is a humorous solo play with a theme familiar to many working artists: the desperate search for purpose and a desperate search for income.
Cerna flexes his versatility in the role, portraying at least 15 different characters. The play dives into human experiences including dreams, purpose, loss, and love in a tumultuous time of AIDS and homophobia. Despite the show’s funny moments, it also asks serious questions about the gay community and the American Dream as it relates (or doesn’t relate) to gay people.
