We’ve learned about a very interesting opportunity for folks interested sustainable living—a paid internship with Hellgate Farm! The internship goes from March to October 2015, and the work will be done for both Hellgate Farm Inc. and Homestead Design Build LLC.

Hellgate Farm is actually a network of urban farms in Queens, farms that grow in backyards and on rooftops, in both soil and hydroponically. Homestead Design Build is a “design and contracting arm associated with Hellgate Farm that integrates food production into buildings.” The issue of energy is a big one for them, and their team includes structural engineers, permaculture designers, and green builders. As for what the intern will do, it’s split between computer work and field work.

Administrative work includes social media and communications, billing/financial, working to create various initiatives, and handling materials for new garden sites. Clerical work is also part of the deal. The field work includes photography, seed starting, garden cultivation, harvest and delivery, composting and outreach. It goes without saying that the person in this position must love the outdoors!

Here’s how the compensation looks:

HOUSING: Free housing in a private room, including electric, gas, and Internet utilities in the first floor of the Hellgate Farm House (a 3 bedroom apartment on 30th Ave) from March 1st 2015 to October 31st 2015 corresponding to the length of the initial internship. The other housemates are like-minded and are working in the gardening and sustainable construction fields.

CSA SHARE: A free CSA share for the 2015 season, distributed once a week from approximately June 1st to October 31st.

MONEY: A stipend paid every two weeks of $200.00 ($100/week). From March 1st to October 31st the total is $3,500.00. There’s an option for additional compensated hours depending on need of the companies and interest and ability of the intern. Work could be anything from staffing an education event to simply helping out with an additional work project.

If this sounds like you or someone you know, forward this post to them. Then email rob@hellgatefarm.com and CC anna@hellgatefarm.com. They would prefer an in-person interview but could arrange other options depending on the person. Applications will be accepted and reviewed on a rolling basis. They want to fill the position ASAP, too. Good luck!
