We just heard that master of funk George Clinton is going to be in Astoria on Monday, October 27 at 7 p.m.! He’ll be in town for a book signing at MOMI of his memoir, Brothas Be, Yo Like George, Ain’t That Funkin’ Kinda Hard on You?: A Memoir (2014, Atria Books). He’ll also be present for the screening of the 1994 TV special Cosmic Slop, which he originally hosted, considered to be a “groundbreaking cult-favorite.” There will be a discussion after that, moderated by James Mtume, the Grammy-winning recording artist, former Miles Davis band member, and current New York talk radio show host. The book signing will happen after that. More about Cosmic Slop: The psychedelic tour de force, three-part Cosmic Slop (Dirs. Reginald Hudlin, Warrington Hudlin, Kevin Rodney Sullivan. 1994, 83 mins. Digital projection) initially generated controversy when it aired on HBO, for its provocative depictions of class and racial tensions. Cosmic Slop was often compared to The Twilight Zone. George Clinton is, of course, best known for his work with the bands Parliament and Funkadelic a.k.a. the P-Funk All Stars, and is considered one of the foremost innovators of funk music. Tickets are $20 ($12 members at the Film Lover, Dual, and Family levels /free for Silver Screen and above). Advance online sales will be made available to Museum members on Tuesday, October 7. Public sales begin Thursday, October 9. We expect this is going to be a fascinating and interesting evening. And yes, likely provocative. George Clinton is a LEGEND, and if you can make it on that evening, we highly recommend it.
