Some Astorians will have to find another local grocery store to shop at come fall—the Key Food at 22-15 31st Street, between Ditmars and 23rd Ave, will be permanently shutting down this October.

The Real Deal reported the news earlier this week, stating that the landlord, Jenel Management, plans to tear down the building and construct a three-story space featuring a Target on the upper two floors and a different grocery store chain on the bottom floor.

As for what that supermarket will be? They have a lease with a “major supermarket chain,” though it hasn’t been signed yet due to delays from the pandemic. Of course, with all of the construction time, it likely won’t be years until a new grocery store opens in that space.

The store employs almost 150 workers, who unfortunately will all lose their jobs come fall.

It has been in that location for over 20 years, and though the management company said they have been working to negotiate new lease terms for the past few years with the parent food company, apparently they are going in a completely new direction (literally) instead.

So sad. The congestion and traffic this Target is going to bring will ruin Astoria more then it already has been.

This is horrible!!!! What else is open in this neighborhood???? I knew it when the management started putting crates on the racks with packages of food in front of them to hide empty shelves. Also, fewer and fewer items on the shelves!! This place has been the main staple for thus neighborhood for years!!!! Shame!! A Target!!???? Who needs that? Already have a TJ Maxx!!!! If no more Keyfoids, how about a Whole Foods or, a Trader Joe’s!!!!!?????

Keyfood is an essential business at this location. Target is not. Renew the lease for Keyfood. They have provided the neighborhood over 35 years of essential groceries. We need them now more than ever.
