You’ve probably tried, or at least seen, Hellgate Farm products (notably their delicious hot sauce) all over local Queens—from tasting parties at Big aLICe Brewing to the shelves at Lockwood and Astoria Bier & Cheese. But you may not know how much more Hellgate Farm does, and just how much it has grown (pun intended) since starting nine years ago. And now they’re looking for your help to grow even bigger! Hellgate Farm began as a small backyard garden in Astoria. Two years later, they started a garden in their neighbor’s yard, and the next year, they expanded to another backyard and an industrial rooftop space. Since then they’ve built 10 gardens in previously unused or underutilized spaces in Northwest Queens through partnerships within the neighborhood. They also run a neighborhood food scrap drop-off site to make compost (see our composting guide here), educate hundreds of people in hands-on skills from gardening to carpentry, and run a farmers market at Socrates Sculpture Park. But, since they want to get bigger and better for the neighborhood, they’ve launched a crowdfunding campaign to support the following: 1. Improve farm infrastructure to more efficiently cultivate, harvest, wash, and store produce. 2. Substantially reduce the cost of raw produce for those in need and increase outreach through food justice initiatives. 3. Expand composting systems, to process more kitchen waste from the community, diverting it from the landfill. 4. Formalize and expand education and workshop offerings Besides just helping a good community cause, there are also rewards for contributing—from hot sauce and tours to restaurant partnerships, garden builds, and corporate sponsorship!
