The Museum of the Moving Image just announced the 40 films that will make up the eighth edition of its First Look Festival, which showcases new international cinema, as well as live talks and events. The First Look Festival is all about inventive new films, and they range quite a bit in terms of subject matter and style. In the festival, you’ll find documentaries alongside award-winning shorts, as well as films created by arts collectives and other collaborations. Sergei Loznitza’s Donbass The Festival will run from January 11 to 21. The opening night film will be Donbass, a “surrealistic” film by Ukrainian director Sergei Loznitza, whose documentary The Trial, made from archival footage, will also be shown during the festival. Loznitza is a winner of the Un Certain Regard Award for Best Director at the Cannes Film Festival. Claire Simon’s Young Solitude Closing night will feature Young Solitude by French director Claire Simon, in which we hear about the world views, hopes, and dreams of a group of teens at a suburban high school in France. The rest of the First Look Festival features films from all over the world, including China, South Korea, Taiwan, Ukraine, Slovenia, Denmark, France, Israel, Pakistan, Mexico, Canada, Belgium, United Kingdom, and the United States. Get your tickets and see the full calendar on MOMI’s website, where you can also read about the individual films. Tickets to the films also include same-day admission to the museum.
