Colombian Bakery and Cafe Delicias Caleñas Opens in Astoria

A third location of Queens Colombian bakery/cafe, Delicias Caleñas, has opened up in the Ditmars area in the space that used to be home to Greek butchers House of Prime Meat.

Back in October we told you about the closing of a few businesses, including House of Prime Meat (AKA A & D Meat Market). In that post we mentioned that Delicias Caleñas was connected to the late butcher’s address, 22-55 31st Street. Thanks to a tipster, we’ve learned they are now open!

Delicias Caleñas brings Colombian food to the Ditmars area; they previously established two locations in Jackson Heights/Corona. This is not the first Colombian restaurant in this section of Astoria, as you can find Sandro’s Latin Food a little ways down on 23rd Avenue; the short lived Earth, Wind & Fire Cafe that was located next to Casinelli’s on 23rd Avenue in 2012 also sold tasty Colombian food but couldn’t sustain enough business to stay open for long.

Delicias Caleñas offers drinks, sweet and savory (hopefully a good pandebono) pastries, empanadas and plates of food with plenty of fried plantains and avocado on the side. My favorite thing to try at any Colombian restaurant/cafe is the Bandeja Paisa, a hearty Colombian breakfast that includes a savory mix of carbs, protein and fat—Delicias Caleñas’ plate includes rice, meat, egg, sausage, avocado, beans and chicharrón. You can see more of their menu, here.
