The annual Sparrow Film Project is one of the creative highlights in all of Astoria land, and the award show and gala each year is always a treat. It will take place at the Museum of the Moving Image on Thursday, December 7 at 6:30pm. The organizers describe the Project as “”Based in Astoria NYC, with international participation, we are a three week, three minute film making experience that will challenge and inspire you.”

Here’s a little more about what the Project is and how it started:

“The Sparrow Tavern birthed the film project when a rag tag group of artists drew made-up film names from a hat and challenged themselves to make a three minute film in 3 weeks. Each edition of the project over the years has altered the challenge in some way but keeping the structure of 3 minute film in 3 weeks. The first awards was held at the Sparrow Tavern in Astoria, Queens, corner of 24th avenue and 29th street. The project editions evolved into an internationally participated event that includes and honors filmmakers, hosts a gala emceed with live music, food and awards, and has established a community forum to create, invent and share ideas with film as the medium.”

The gala will welcome the filmmakers, friends of the Project, and its supporting community for a screening of the nominated films and award ceremony. Attendees will also enjoy champagne before the screenings, an open bar and hors d’ouevres at intermission, and then the awards show will start. Live music will also be a part of the celebration. There will also be an afterparty (location TBD).

“Participants and supporters alike share in the excitement surrounding the awards gala,” remarks Mike Free, Sparrow Film Project producer. “We are excited to celebrate the incredible achievement of our participants with a night of food, drink, and musical performances at the Museum’s Sumner Redstone Theatre.”

Every day I walk past a Sparrow Film Project poster and I’m happy to learn more about it! It’d be fun to attend the Gala. I haven’t been to MOMI since I was a kid (and dubbed the scene from Taxi Driver)!

This seems like such a fun and interesting event that I would to attend with a friend who also makes shorts.
