The world is insane, the weather is (maybe) getting chilly, and the holidays are almost here. What better way to tame the craziness than with some comfort food? Astoria has PLENTY of options, so while it was difficult to narrow it down to just ten, here are some dishes that are basically a hug on a plate (or in a bowl!)

The Bonnie – Roasted Carrot Press Sandwich

So this might sound a little odd, but trust us: this sandwich from The Bonnie is banging. Slow-roasted whole carrots are sandwiched between delicious melty cheddar on sourdough bread, and served with a side of pesto. Boom: vegetarian comfort!

The Bonnie is located at 29-12 23rd Ave.

The Pomeroy – Fried Chicken

Is there a dish more comforting than fried chicken? There’s something about crispy skin and juicy chicken meat that just makes everything better. The Pomeroy‘s fried chicken is some of the best in the neighborhood, and is here to cure what ails you.

The Pomeroy is located at 36-12 Ditmars Blvd.

Butcher Bar – Beef Brisket

A big plate (or sandwich) full of beef brisket is the the epitome of stick-to-your-ribs comfort. Butcher Bar‘s version is fantastic, no matter how you slice it.

Butcher Bar is located at 37-10 30th Ave.

The Queens Kickshaw – Mozzarella Grilled Cheese With Tomato Soup

The Queens Kickshaw Grilled Cheese

Let’s face it: all of The Queens Kickshaw‘s grilled cheese sandwiches are fantastic examples of comfort food. But the better-than-homemade combination of mozzarella grilled cheese and creamy tomato soup is a classic.

The Queens Kickshaw is located at 40-17 Broadway.

Milkflower Pizza

Mmmm, pizza. All of Milkflower‘s pies are so good, it was impossible to pick just one. The St. The Ghost (cheddar, mozzarella, parmigiano-reggiano, and honey) is one of my very favorites, but then I saw this beautiful picture of the Stun Dunn (caramelized onion, gruyere, scallion, red onion, garlic, and mozzarella) and I couldn’t leave it out. Devouring one of Milkflower’s pies never fails to make me feel better after a long day (or week!)

Milkflower is located at 34-12 31st Ave.

Queens Comfort – Donuts from Donut Diva

We definitely need to represent some sweets on this list! Queens Comfort obviously has more incredible savory comfort food options than I could name, but their sugary treats are also more than worthy of a shout out. Their Donut Diva-created donuts are out of this world, whether they’re serving up Pumpkin Butterscotch, Lucky Charms Cake, Banana Pudding (pictured here), or whatever crazy combination they think of next!

Queens Comfort is located at 40-09 30th Ave.

Sac’s Place – Four Cheese Gnocchi

Give this gnocchi a try next time you visit!

Creamy. Carbs. Need I say more? Sac’s Place serves up these little pillows of heaven, and digging into a plate of these is what dreams are made of.

Sac’s Place is located at 25-41 Broadway.

No. 5 -Pesto Zoodles

Comfort food you can feel good about? It exists! The pesto zoodles at No.5 are delicious and hearty, but also light enough that you won’t feel weighed down. Win-win!

No. 5 is located at 35-43 37th Street in Long Island City.

The Sparrow Tavern – Cheeseburger (Or Veggie Burger!)

Sparrow burger

The Sparrow Tavern is the type of bar/restaurant where you immediately feel comfortable and at home. It’s fitting that both their regular cheeseburger and veggie burger are standouts, no matter the time of day.

The Sparrow Tavern is located at 24-01 29th St.

King of Falafel – Falafel Platter or Sandwich

Yeahhhh baby! King of Falafel‘s signature menu item is a vegan comfort food dream. It’s delicious, filling, and can be served on a platter or sandwiched between the carb-y goodness of a pita. It’s my go-to takeout option after a long day, and judging by the steady stream of hungry customers, I’m not the only one!

King of Falafel is located at 30-15 Broadway.
