With the news recently of Citi Bike expanding into Astoria, and the new bike lanes added to 31st Avenue, the topic of cycling is rather relevant these days. Safe bicycle routes and bike parking can always be improved, and the hope is that such improvements and enhancements to the bike transportation network will encourage even more cycling in NYC. And with traffic increasing and the subways’ eternal crowding, getting around by bike could really become a viable alternative (at least when it’s not snowing) for a number of people.

With that in mind, head to tonight’s Bike Friendly Astoria Workshop produced by Transportation Alternatives, a local nonprofit organization, “working for better bicycling, walking and public transit.” At the workshop you’ll get a chance to help them identify improvements in the neighborhood that will help cyclists and pedestrians.
