Earlier this month NY YIMBY reported that Kaufman Astoria Studios filed plans to build two new sound stages to their campus. The stages will be located at 36-02 34th Ave, on the corner of 36th Street.

We reached out to Kaufman Astoria Studios for confirmation and they sent us this, from June:

The stages… are Stage O, which will be 15,000+ square feet, and Stage N, which will be 8,500+ square feet. The two stages will be housed in a single building so that they can accommodate one large production or two separate productions. The building will be four stories high, with approximately 26,000 square feet of ancillary production space and 45,000 square feet of office space on the upper floors. It will also include an underground parking garage.

We looked at the DOB records filed on September 14 and the square footage has been updated to 26,600 square feet of manufacturing and 86,623 square feet of commercial space. The new building will be 84 feet tall—that might sound like an 8-story building (and it could look that way) but as you know, sound stages need a lot of height. There will be 138 parking spaces, “spread between the cellar and ground floor,” according to YIMBY

Hal Rosenbluth, President and CEO of Kaufman Astoria Studios, says about the expansion, “There is no better place to make a movie or TV show than New York City. With the tremendous growth of the entertainment industry here, our stages are constantly occupied, and we’re thrilled that with the new stages we will be able to expand the number of productions that call New York home.”

YIMBY reminds us of KAS’s previous acquisitions and expansion efforts: “[Kaufman Astoria Studios] recently scooped up the block-long United Artists Kaufman Astoria movie theater for $45 million, and the Kaufman Organization is developing a seven-story, 33-unit condo building called “The Marx” across the street from the movie studios. The one- and two-bedroom apartments hit the market a year ago, priced from $600,000 to $1,400,000.”
