On this grey day now sunny day, we present you with these food-related tidbits—rumors we’ve heard, news, linkage, etc. If you have anything to share, please leave a comment with the info.

From an anonymous WHA tipster:

Sandwich Bar was sold and closed its doors today and will open its doors again on late Wednesday or Thursday under new ownership, and possibly a new menu.”

I walked by yesterday on the way to our tasting at The Thirsty Koala… post coming soon, but I gotta spoil it by saying the salmon in parchment is beyond excellent—cooking in parchment is a foolproof way of ensuring the fish is moist. It was topped with feta, olives, sundried tomatoes, and lemon slices—heaven! OK, back to the Sandwich Bar—I did see if closed yesterday. I’ll be curious to see this new menu. (33-01 Ditmars Blvd)

I also passed by MP Taverna and saw they were closed by Consumer Affairs. Apparently some sidewalk seating things caused the closure. Take that as you will. (31-29 Ditmars Blvd)

We updated our post on what’s going in at the old Caffe Bene space—Bald Headed Billy is out, The Last Word is in. Get ready for some speakeasy action with table service, stuff to drink and eat. (31-30 Ditmars Blvd)

We had a chance to chat with the guys behind Aloha NYC the other day. They are pairing efforts to bring delicious Hawaiian and seafood dishes to Astoria along with a relaxed and beautiful vibe with the space. Plus they hold deep respect for those in service—firefighters, teachers, EMTs, they welcome you with open arms. (37-02 Astoria Blvd South)

Kambri Crews of Q.E.D. told me about a kickass crepe she got at Locus Cafe the other day. And don’t forget—head to Q.E.D. for some hot coworking action this month! (23-14 Ditmars Blvd; 27-16 23rd Ave)

The land of the SLA reveals that a number of local spots are anticipating their liquor licenses. That would include Flattops and Kilo Astoria on Ditmars, and The Green Street, a new organic restaurant opening on 47th Road in LIC. This is a fairly quiet street, mostly homes/apartments and manufacturing; a restaurant will really change things. (33-06 Ditmars Blvd, 31-27 Ditmars Blvd, 10-39 47th Road)

Speaking of openings, we got an email this morning that says ORO, the new Italian joint opening up in LIC on the north side of Queens Plaza, has pushed its opening back to April 26 or 27. (41-17 Crescent)

I know we are not part of LIC or Astoria, but some of us folks on Roosevelt Island feel like we are. I would really love to know about restaurants in the area that will deliver to the island. We’ve got some slim pickins here and there are 15,000 of us. I often go into and would rather go to Astoria & LIC when I go out to eat but sometimes I just want to stay home and enjoy a good meal cooked by someone else. If you could include that information in your reports that would be awesome.
