Katch_Drinks On a quiet Super Bowl Sunday morning, members of the WHA crew headed over to Katch Astoria to try out their re-imagined brunch menu. Having only experienced Katch in its sports bar form, I had no expectation and was keenly interested to see how the kitchen would make the leap from bar food to brunch. I’m here to tell you that they made the leap with ease. We chowed down on classic dishes with interesting flavor combinations, nice plate presentation, all washed down with alcohol filled drinks (Mimosa, Bloody Mary and Sangria pictured above). As per usual no tasting would be complete without the photographer awesomeness that is Ms. Marielle Solan! She captures the deliciousness of everything we eat.

Let’s get to it!

Katch_ShrimpGritsWe were super excited to try the Shrimp & Grits made with ample cheesiness and chunks of pork belly. If you were looking for a brunch dish to help cure a previous night of partying…this is the meal for you.

Katch Astoria_AvocadoIf the cheese grits is a little too rich for your brunch meal, the complete opposite would be the Avocado Toast.  It’s a great choice for people looking to keep it on the light side without sacrificing flavor. Two rounds of toasted 7-grain bread with a slathering of Kale pesto, topped with a thick layer of fresh avocado and marinated red peppers. Then on top of it all, a poached egg with a pinch of alfalfa sprouts. You’ll find a drizzling of chili infused olive oil to add some subtle heat.

Katch Astoria_Eggs BenedictNext, we had the Eggs Benedict, a dish served up on many a brunch menu. A nice little surprise in Katch’s version is two beef slider patties. They’re thick, juicy, and make a good pedestal for the eggs, chipotle hollandaise sauce, and small pieces of chorizo. As if this wasn’t hearty enough, the dish is served with herb roasted home fries and baby greens.

Katch Astoria_French Toast Now we always try to watch our language here at We heart Astoria, but this F’ING French Toast dish is so F’ING GOOD! These were an overwhelming crowd favorite, with all three folks at the table saying they would come just for this dish alone. These pieces of toast are golden brown with a very crunchy cinnamon exterior.  Be prepared, because the slices are topped with a scoop of vanilla ice cream, side of banana rum sauce, and slices of banana. This is a perfect sweet brunch dish. Seriously good.

So if you’re looking for a new brunch place, give Katch Astoria a try (and get that french toast).
