To be honest, I’d passed this place more times than I can count over the past decade, and regret not venturing in before then. If you’re looking for solid, classic Greek fare in the heart of Astoria, this is the place for you. It’s not about “re-envisioning” or “elevating” Greek food, but presenting many tried and true classics for those seeking traditional Mediterranean and southern European flavors. Below are some (but not all) of the things we ate. Probably the top dishes for us were the halloumi, octopus, and swordfish, but it was all good. We had some wine with dinner, a regional dry red from Paphos, Cyprus, Agios Onoufrios. A mild-mannered, earthy, and tasty hummus (I say mild-mannered because I’ve been eating so much “Supremely Spicy” hummus from Sabra). It was served with slices of grilled pita. Grilled Halloumi cheese with tomato that looked beautiful and tasted great—hard to go wrong with the combo of salty, warm charred cheese and juicy tomatoes drizzled with olive oil and lemon. Thank goodness eating Halloumi is a normal thing in Astoria—we wish everyone could experience the magic. Horitaki Salad, made with lettuce, tomato, olives, onions, herbs, and olives all topped with salty feta—fresh and delicious. Grilled Octopus—this version keeps up with some of the high quality of octopus we expect in Astoria (NB: if your octopus is tough, it’s time to head back to the kitchen and work on it; and yes, I’ve had rubbery, tasteless octopus elsewhere in this town). The side of tomatoes was a nice touch. Rice with shrimp—I don’t care for shrimp but Lindsay loved this dish. Grilled Swordfish Kabab. It is very, very, VERY easy to cook swordfish until it dries out, but this was wonderfully moist and tender. Bravo, Aliada! Loved the slices of zucchini, too.
