A couple weeks ago, NBC’s “First Look” series visited our fair borough and dedicated an entire episode to Queens, entitled Destination Queens. They referenced the Lonely Planet proclamation that Queens is the number one travel destination in 2015, but we’ve all known for years that Queens is excellent. Still, it’s nice to see the borough on film, and also to see our friend and Queens expert, Jeff Orlick, show the show’s host, Audrina Patridge, around the western end of Queens. The show visits these neighborhoods: Jackson Heights/Woodside. Catch beef momos and the momo burger at Little Tibet; Colombian arepas from the Arepa Lady; and Filipino food at House of Inasal, including Sisig Na Bangus (marinated milkfish) and Chicken Inasal (Woodside). Astoria. Stops at Welling Court Murals, originally started in 2009 by locals on Welling Court who wanted to fight blight, and have succeeded in getting people engaged in public spaces (and Audrina paints something herself); A visit to Astoria is greatly enhanced by a stop at Singlecut Beersmiths, too. Rockaways. Surfing! And the Rockaway Beach Surf Club afterwards, though the woman who says she doesn’t consider Rockaway Beach to be Queens sounds seriously confused. So check it out!
