Fans of Shakespeare’s cursed Scottish play are in for a treat with Wombat Theatre Co.’s presentation of Macbeth at the Secret Theatre in Long Island City. The production opened Thursday, April 30th and will run until May 10th. Tickets can be purchased online or at the door on the day of each performance.

I attended Saturday evening’s performance, and thoroughly enjoyed it! Those familiar with Macbeth already know of the twisted plot, but this production provides its own unique interpretation. As Wombat Theatre Co. describes it:

“Shakespeare’s potent tragedy on the nature of ambition comes to life in Wombat Theatre Company’s intense production of Macbeth. Expressionistic staging takes the audience into the mind of the notorious Scottish warrior, from his bloody rise to the throne through his paranoid reign and down into the all-consuming depths of his madness. A fast-paced and visceral production swarming with witches and demons, guilt and treachery, war and murder upon murder that careens toward its climax. When lust for power takes over Macbeth, all hell literally breaks loose.”

Despite the heavy subject matter, the likable and engaging Wombat cast pulls the audience in and adds a fresh take on the Shakespeare classic. The production is anchored by the powerhouse performances of David Lawton, who takes on the complicated Macbeth, and Kristen Tomanocy, who does double duty as Lady Macbeth and Lady Macduff. Lawton gives Macbeth a rugged, gritty feel, while Tomanocy commands the stage with the perfect combination of composure and insanity.

Kristen Tomanocy gives a gripping performance as Lady Macbeth.
