Twitter Facebook Email Print Photo credit: 6sqft Over on 6sqft they’ve revealed plans for a new residential building located just around the corner from Kaufman Astoria Studios and Museum of the Moving Image, at 34-32 35th Street. It will be called Marx, and we wonder if that is a tip of the hat to the Marx Brothers, who filmed their first two movies (The Cocoanuts and Animal Crackers) at Kaufman way back when. As for the building, it will be located where two houses and a parking lot are currently (there’s also a big construction site nearby that seems to be in limbo; nothing’s been happening for some time). There will be 33 units in 7 stories, with 18 parking spaces available; the total square footage is 29,994. Looks like there will be an elevator, too. 6sqft describes the building: The Marx is designed by Fogarty Finger Architects, who also designed One Murray Park, and will contain 33 units, likely rentals. It will feature a dark grey brick façade of large, evenly gridded square windows (the latest rage in NYC architecture) whose angled metal panels and glazing variations will create an interesting play of light and shadow. They also think the place may actually end up being called “Be@Marx” since the owner, Mario Procida, has a company that likes to call its properties “Be@Whatever” (Be@Schermerhorn is an example). Seems a bit precious to me but there you go. Will that fit the vibe of the Kaufman Arts District, too? I guess we’ll just have to wait and see. UPDATE: 11/24: We were contacted by the sales director, Christina DeCurtis, who tells us this: The Marx will be a 33 units condominium comprised of 1 beds, 2 beds, and a 3 bed penthouse. We will have a resident’s lounge, a gym, and a common roof deck. We will also have a 421a tax abatement. We should start sales early next year. Reply Matty November 20th, 2014 Hey, did they say how long this project was going to take? =) Reply megc November 20th, 2014 Ha! They’ve been submitting paperwork since last February. Hopefully that means they will really get going soon, but you never know. NYC paperwork, as you may know, can be a slog. Reply Leave a Reply Cancel replyYour email address will not be published.
