Twitter Facebook Email Print Astoria Pool Thanks to our friends at Astorians, I was led to this article in the NY Daily News about the city pools this recent summer. Bottom line: Astoria Pool is crazy popular, with an increase in attendance from last year. It helps that it’s the biggest pool in the city, and that it’s near a lot of people in a gorgeous public park setting. So, because of the cooler—and may I say, AWESOME—summer we had, pool attendance went down 7% throughout the city’s 55 public pools, a decrease from 1.4 million swimmers to 1.3 million. The timeframe measurement was from June 27 to August 16. Also, that meant crime was down at the pools. Yes, it happens—we’ve known of some rowdy and dangerous behavior over the years at our own Astoria Pool. As for the popularity of Astoria Pool, attendance jumped 12.5%, the highest in the city. That’s quite something. And we also know that our adult lap swimmers triumphed this past summer, too, with the most miles swum of any participating NYC pool. So there you go, Astoria—our pool is truly excellent, a real gem in all the city! Basically just July and August, right? It’s amazing how much work must go into maintaining them to run for only a few weeks each year. Reply megc September 4th, 2014 I also think the time the pools are open is too short. I say open them mid-May to mid-September. However, I am sure it has to do with NYC schoolkids’ schedules.
