Last week I caught a nasty virus that totally floored me for days. I won’t get into the details, but it was just bad, not to mention how crappy it is to be sick during summer. I lost a lot of my appetite at first, but when I regained it I wanted one thing—the lemon chicken rice soup at Soho (that diner-type spot that is below The Rock on 31st Street near Ditmars).

Now, I’ve had this kind of soup other places in Astoria, but I am very fond of their version—it is my perfect comfort food when ill. It’s so tasty but not too strongly flavored, has a nice lemony flavor, just enough chicken, and it’s smooth with a great texture for a throat that may be a little tender (I tend to abuse my throat when I’m dealing with upper respiratory viruses). I’m so glad to have it in my “get better soon” arsenal.

So how about you? What are your favorite Astoria foods when you’re not feeling well? We’d love to know what comforts you when you’re down for the count with a stupid virus. And stay healthy out there, Astorians!

This soup looks delish regardless. I had Avgolemono before and that is so lemony yet creamy!

It’s possible, though I didn’t detect much in the way of egg. That said, I’ve never attempted to make this soup, so I’m not sure how the egg is utilized in the soup. Regardless, it is delicious.

I’m actually glad to hear of a place with good chicken soup in the neighborhood. When I’m sick, I end up begging my boyfriend to bring me chicken soup from the West Side supermarket near his apartment on the UWS. Generally though, I eat plain bagels or toast, and plenty of lemon zinger tea with an extra helping of lemon juice.
