A good handful of WHA readers have brought this place to our attention—thanks, friends! I walked by the other day hoping to talk to them, but they seemed pretty frazzled. And then I learned why… they hope to open next week! It’s going to be a French cafe, and as you can see bread, pastries, salads, and coffee will be offered. It also appears it will be called Cafe Madame SouSou. It’s located at 31-05 33rd Street.
The space looked pretty small inside, but people can be pretty creative when it comes to maximizing space. I saw some refrigerator cases and a few other things strewn about inside. The space used to be home to the Manhattan Food Vendors Association.

While doing a search for “Cafe Madame Sousou Astoria,” we came across this from the NY Times:
As if all that wasn’t enough, it’s also the opening weekend for the Greek Cultural Center’s play “Madam Sousou Conquers Manhattan,” based on a famous character from a Greek novel and sitcom that the center has adapted to take place in Astoria. Just about everyone in the audience but you will be familiar with it; just follow the supertitles and laugh when the person next to you does.
We’ll check in on them next week and see what’s what! Feel free to share your experiences there, too.
It’s opened! :)
