Astoria Music Society’s 2011-12 Season Image by Waltz-Astoria We heard the news last week that beloved live music space (and home to giant slices of cheesecake and watermelon icys) Waltz-Astoria is closing… but opening up in a new space. As for the location, Pedro (one of the owners) states on their Facebook page that it will remain in the Ditmars neighborhood, just a block from the train. We also hear that the space will be bigger, which is music to our ears (pun intended). The current space will close by end of month—the final night is April 26 and they will have a final concert that evening. There will be a couple of weeks in between closing and opening to get everything ready and prepared at the new space. The ability to work via WiFi from the new Waltz will remain—Waltz was a godsend to me shortly after Hurricane Sandy when I had to work and my power was out—and will still be a viable alternative to Starbucks in the coffee department. On a personal note, I’ll miss walking down Ditmars and stopping in. Waltz was a big part of my early years in Astoria and I’ve seen it go through many changes. This new location is another change, and I wish Song and Pedro lots of luck as they make this transition!
