at-the-queens-county-market-singlecut-astoria-queensWho’s heading to Queens County Market this Sunday? It’s the last one of the year, and promises to be extra festive with a pie fundraiser, and tons of excellent local food purveyors such as Charlito’s Cocina, Native Coffee Roasters, Gustavo’s Salsa and more. It’s held at SingleCut Beersmiths, so come thirsty!  19-33 37th Street, Astoria.

5_Napkin_Burger_FrontWe’re sad to report the closing of our near and dear, 5 Napkin Burger. Having many good times there, we wish these guys well and hope to visit them at their Manhattan locales. In the meantime, what will become of this ample business space?

Have you seen that Trattoria L’Incontro’s Vino Divino space is for rent? Any leads? We’ll do some digging and see what Chef Rocco has to say, soon!

Koliba langosRecently visiting Koliba, one of my favorite Slovak haunts, I was reminded of all the delicious cheesy goodness they’re serving. A few newbies that caught my attention are the fried Camembert with home-style potatoes, layered eggs with cured meats and homemade mayo sauce, as well as their spiced mulled wine, which is perfect for the holidays. 31-11 23rd Avenue, Astoria.  718.626.0430

Excited to see the newest rendition of Eater’s Queens Heatmap, it shines a light on a few Astoria and LIC establishments such as Dutch Kills Centraal, M.Wells Steakhouse, Sunnyside’s Venturo and more.

greek-style-shrimp-taverna-kycladesIf you haven’t yet visited Astoria’s Greek staple, Taverna Kyclades, we highly suggest you check it out. Sure it gets crowded, but the trick is to go early (as in for a 6 p.m. dinner). Trying it the other week with a few friends, we had a great experience, with a few standouts such as the Greek-style shrimp, stuffed shrimp with crabmeat, grilled calamari, and of course their homemade galaktoboureko, which is on the house.  33-07 Ditmars Blvd, Astoria.  718.545.8666

Oh, no — no more Slider Happy Hour. Very sad. I hope something great moves into that space.

I was thinking about 5 Napkin the other day and it occurs to me that if you can’t succeed selling burgers and alcohol in Astoria, you aren’t really trying.
