This just landed in our inbox, marked effective immediately:

“After three years, we have decided to close the 5 Napkin Burger in Astoria.  It was a hard decision to make as we have enjoyed being part of the community, but we are eager now to focus on other growth opportunities for 5 Napkin Burger in New York City and beyond.  On a positive note many of our valued team members will be joining us at one of our three Manhattan locations or at a sister Tour de France restaurant.   We appreciate the enthusiasm of our guests, and want to thank you again for your support and we hope to see you soon in Manhattan.”

Such sad news for Astoria and for 35th Avenue. Fingers crossed something amazing opens in this prime space soon.

The management in this place sucked. The waitstaff left much to be desired also. I’ll be boycotting 5NB at all of their locations going forward.

I was proud to be part of the team that opened this restaurant. It is too bad that the “management” continuously changed the menu, went corporate and ceased to care about the quality of the food. The absolute worst part about all of this is that they didn’t notify their employees until the very night that they closed for the last time, although apparently the decision was made over a month ago. Leaving their employees in the dark and suddenly closing leaving them with no income is inexcusable.

I ate there once and I hate it and never go back there again. Too pricy and the burger doesn’t taste as good as they advertised. I hate their cheap commercial at the movie theater that claimed they are the best burger in NYC. The whole decoration is a slaughter house with the hooks all around. Who want to eat at a slaugther house?

I don’t think it really has much to do with price; there are plenty of restaurants that are far more expensive than 3NB in the area that have done well. If you are going to charge that much for a burger, though, it had better be good. A preformed patty, that when ordered medium rare doesn’t leave any juice on the plate just doesn’t cut it. There are much better burgers in the hood, most of them cheaper.

It’s not the prices so much. It’s the competition for a eatery. Uno’s, Appleby’s , the beer garden and studio space are doing fine too. Astor Room is doing well.

I sort of knew this would happen. Despite their re-tooling their happy hours, they are just too expensive for the neighborhood. News flash: This is NOT Manhattan or Brooklyn; you can’t expect a sudden influx of rich people from flyover country to support your expenses without addressing the locals and the neighborhood.

CMD said it perfectly Not sure what happened to this place. It started out great when it opened but the quality of the food and the service has declined steadily over the last three years. I only half-heartedly told the waitstaff how I wanted my burger because it never came out as anything but well-done.

Pretty sad to see them go, and so suddenly. Great place for large groups and great happy hour specials. I hope something replaces it soon! It’s a great space in an awesome location.

NYC’s restaurant business is always in flux, and hamstrung by high rents, demanding palates, inconsistent quality, and from an economy that isn’t in a recovery. the food was horrible and the service just as bad at FNB. And despite their press release, some of their employees were told that their Manhattan presence is also suffering and might be closing in the next year, so it’s unlikely that any of their Astoria employees will be working at those locations on the other side of the East River.

Too bad, but I have to say that I found their burgers to be fairly mediocre and had gotten worse over time.
