We received an email from the Buffalo Exchange PR folks with more info about the new Astoria/Ditmars store that is almost ready to open. Additional intel says this Saturday is opening day for them.

Their hours will be Monday to Saturday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 6 p.m. This is their fifth location in NYC, at 29-16 Ditmars Blvd. They plan to offer “a cost-efficient and environmentally-friendly shopping experience by inviting Astoria-area customers to buy, sell, or trade new and recycled fashion, celebrating the trends and creative culture unique to the Astoria community.”

This clothing is expected to be “new, used, and vintage fashion from high-end designer pieces to everyday apparel, focusing on quality, trending merchandise.” Get ready for “a fun-filled shopping experience that is often more akin to a treasure hunt.” Take that as you will.

I found the info about the space itself pretty interesting all on its own. Apparently it was built in 1930, was home to a number of paint stores, a bank, and most recently the Hallmark Celebrations store. Their renovation includes “13 foot ceilings, a rustic inspired floor and exposed natural brick walls.” It’s considered “vintage-industrial” as far as atmosphere goes. Look for plenty of earthy colors, too.

Buffalo Exchange has developed an element of philanthropy in their company, and “prides itself as an advocate of the environment and raises funds for local charities through its Tokens for Bags® program.” This means every customer who chooses to use a reusable bag (or no bag at all) is offered one “token” valued at $.05 (the cost to produce a bag). The organizations they intend to support are the East River Development Alliance (ERDA), the North Shore Animal League America and the Alley Pond Environmental Center. ERDA is the only one of the three located in western Queens.
