Astoria Pool

Astoria Park's Olympic size swimming pool

As we mentioned on Facebook back in May, Astoria Park Pool opens tomorrow!  I’ve been watching the pool for the past week during my runs in Astoria Park, and it’s been so satisfying seeing it all filled up and the park staff sprucing up the area. The water is looking good (it was a little green at first but the chlorine has kicked in, killing off the algae) and it’s very enticing during days that are hot and humid, and my face is hot and red from running (yes, I’m one of those red-faced runners).

Apart from free swim during the days, lap swimming will be available to adults Monday-Friday.  Early bird sessions last from 7-8:30am and night owl sessions are from 7pm to dusk. You’ll need to register (free) poolside in order to participate in the lap swim program. The program goes from Tuesday, July 5 through Friday, September 2. Apparently there is even an “Aquatic Specialist” poolside that will help you with your stroke and “watermanship”.

Additionally, lap swimmers who swim 25 miles or more this summer will receive a free t-shirt, and prizes will be awarded to the top three male and female distance swimmers at each pool program. There’s also an awards party scheduled for the end of August to celebrate the fitness accomplishments of lap swimmers throughout the city.

The pool will be open to all 11am to 7pm daily.  They always break to clean the pool mid-day, from 3-4pm, so don’t be surprised if they ask everyone to leave at that time.

Entrance to the pool is free, but be aware that you’ll be asked to wear a lined swimsuit and have a combination lock for the locker room.

All in all, very exciting! Will you be partaking in Astoria Park Pool this summer?

Thanks so much for the info!

Do you know if there is something specific we have to bring (like proof of residency) in order to enter the pool? Would I be allowed to bring 2 guests?

I don’t think so – should be open to all, no matter where you come from, including your guests.

Even though the pool has had some problems with fights over the past few years, I continue to go year after year. I think it is a great way to cool down for free in the summer. Thanks for the tips about lap swimming. I might check it out in the evenings, although I don’t think I can swim 25 miles this summer.
