We were recently made aware of a really interesting event coming up – a cruise along Newtown Creek. Newtown Creek is, of course, the waterway (it’s an estuary, just like the East River and Long Island Sound) between Queens and Brooklyn; the Pulaski Bridge runs over it.

Newtown Creek is also highly polluted – it’s full of toxins, raw sewage, and over 30 million gallons of oil have spilled into it over the years.  Still, people do find ways to enjoy it; it’s very pretty.

This coming Saturday, May 21, you’ll have the chance to check out Newtown Creek yourself. For three hours, you’ll get to take a rare tour of the entire Creek, learn about its history and also what slated for its future. Guest narrators will be on hand to point out historical tidbits, environmental points, and conservation issues throughout the tour.

And how will you tour Newtown Creek? On the MV American Princess, a large vessel with indoor and outdoor seating. A complementary soft drink and souvenir tour brochure is included with the tour. The cruise runs rain or shine.

Here are the logistical details:

OMG,

I have this Saturday off and I was awaiting WHA’s What to do on the weekend post for something cool to do.

But you gave it to me today. I’ve heard about this cruise and have wanted to do it for years.

This is so awesome….thanks Meg
